Children Are the Real Victims of this Covid19 Pandemic!
How Can We Expect Children to Understand, What We Don’t as adults?
Linda Karimo Children's Book Author & Vision Educator
It doesn’t matter whether you are a…
- Mother or Father
- Aunt or Uncle
- Grandma or Grandpa or some kids call him Pop-Pop!
- Your friend with young children
All of us are being asked questions of our children, and somehow we should have the answers. After all, we are adults and are often confused ourselves, depressed, and anxious to
one degree or another. It doesn’t get easier as we plow through the mounting complexity of this Pandemic.
So, can you imagine what the minds of our young children are conjuring up in their heads?
I’m sure you have heard them ask…
“Why can’t I go outside and play?”
Or…
“Why can’t I play with my friends out there?” your child is pointing to her friend Kathy. “Look, Kathy is out there!”
Or…
“Why do I have to get up so early for school? I’m tired. Last year I went to school later.”
Or
“Why can’t I have a play date?”
Or…
“Can I have a sleepover on Friday? Kathy’s mother did it last week? Why couldn’t I go there with my friends?”
Or…
“Why do I only go to school on Monday and Tuesday? I’m a big boy, and we go to school every day.”
Or—
“Why can’t we go to the grocery store? We always went together!
They bring us boxes of food. I don’t see the snacks I like.”
Or…
“My computer screen is all yucky. Can’t we get a new one? I can’t see the teacher well on the screen.”
Or
“In school, we have to eat lunch at our desk, and the milk is too warm, Yuk. Why can’t we have pizza Friday? It was so cool!”
Or…
In this new twisted world, parents might have to pick up food for their children on the days where they learn at home on the computer.
“Mama, why do I have three breakfasts and three lunches?
Look, the bread is soggy.”
Or…
“Why don’t we go to church on Sunday? I like the cookies they serve later.
It’s not fun watching church on the computer. I don’t even get snacks.”
If all these questions sound familiar to you, can you imagine the millions of caregivers who are racking their brains to make sense of this world, not to mention having the right answers for our kids.*
Some parents have told me that they have purchased many E-books and paperbacks for their children in order to try and fill the gap that exists in their daily lives. All this because they can’t hang out with their friends for now.
Shortly before this nasty Pandemic hit, it has always been in the back of my mind to write a series of picture books for young children, which initially would be read to them by their parents. As they grew a little older, they would be encouraged to start reading the text with help from their parents. This was such an important time in my childhood when my Irish grandmother, we called her Nanny, would read to me all the children’s books we could get our hands-on. She was learning English herself.
I was a successful copywriter for many years and had a conversational business way of writing my content. What if I could translate that into stories filled with dialog that would transport you and your little one so that you could live between the pages of the book! Wouldn’t that be something?
I reached back into my childhood and remembered that I was fascinated with the Goldilocks and the Three Bear story. So, I thought to myself, what if I could create a planet of bears that would live their lives the same way that we do, only bear style. Obviously, without the Pandemic. If you and the little one in your life could be transported into that world just for some precious moments each day, would it make a difference for a while?
The stories would be short, certainly not the hundreds of pages in a Harry Potter book or the like. Furthermore, throughout the series, the characters should be present while introducing some other supporting ones in later books.
The two main characters in the series would be Mama Bear and Baby Bear; yup, he’d be around the same age as your child.
I came up with a cute preschool through the first-grade story that both mother and child could become immersed in. And help you as a parent to reinforce the life teachings you are trying to instill into them.
I have just launched such a story…
Baby Bear’s Spaghetti Misadventure
The first book in the series; concise misadventure Stories for Kids and Bears, K-1
In this 44-page picture book filled with 18 full-colored full-page illustrations with lots of dialogs would appeal to you and your child?
The lesson learned by your little one is that sometimes when your child doesn’t listen to you, doing something that was on the forbidden list could actually cause harm for both of you.
You’ll have to make that judgment for yourself. Will it be a hit with you and your peers or not?
